Bacon and Egg Chronicles: Chapel Lane Cafe
• By Tuan Nguyen
Next stop on my quest to taste the best bacon and egg toasties Darwin has to offer, I turn my eye to Chapel Lane Café.
Relatively new on the scene, these guys can be found where Karen's Kitchen used to be, behind Outback Jacks in the city.
I popped in last week for a really nice meat pie (stay tuned for my upcoming meat pie showdown) and today I came back for the bacon and egg toastie. This carb and protein packed breakfast contains two runny eggs and three pieces of bacon in lightly toasted white bread. The chef reminded me a bit of Kumar from MasterChef the way he gently cracked the eggs onto the hot plate. If you like your eggs runny then you'll like this, but it was a bit too runny for my liking. The bacon could also have been cooked for longer to get some crispy action going on. This cost me $5 flat so I can't complain too much, which also makes it the cheapest toasted bacon and egg sandwich I've reviewed so far.
The rest of the items on the menu are quite nice looking as well. They've got various fancy focacias ($6.50), some fancy looking pasta bakes ($8.50), lasagna ($8.50), $2 muffins, salads and various warm foods. The prices seem pretty cheap for what they're offering, perhaps it's a way to get some customers in the door, so I'd suggest making the most of these prices while you can.
