Bacon and Egg Chronicles: Melissa's Take-Away

Bacon and egg toastie from Melissa's take-away

If you've spent some time working in Darwin CBD then you must surely know about Melissa's. Never would you call their servings stingy and you'd never call them expensive either. No guesses for why they're so popular. Many a take-away has come and gone, but this nondescript little take-away has been tucked away in the back corner of the West Lane Arcade for as long as I can remember. It was there when I scored my first full time job working in the Department of Education as a lowly web officer in the early noughties, tasled with updating ugly websites that nobody visited.

I'm still in the website arena and Melissa's is still in the business of making awesome comfort food. They have arguably the best pies in Darwin and quite possibly the fattest sausage roll in all of the southern hemisphere. They're bloody big I tell you. And don't get me started on the gigantic burgers. But this morning I'm not here for all that lunch time goodness. I'm here to continue my quest to sample all the bacon and egg toasties that Darwin has to offer and as you would expect, Melissa's has come to the table with all guns blazing. "Holy guacamole" is uttered when unleashing this beast from its paper confines. There are 2 big slices of bread, 2 small eggs, 3 slices of bacon, a decent amount of butter and lots of BBQ sauce. Here's the kicker to0 – it will only set you back $5.50. I repeat, five dollars and fifty cents. I don't know how they can sell it for that cheap but I'm not complaining!

Usually toasted sandwiches vanish suddenly and without a trace when in front of me, but two thirds of the way in to this monstrous thing I was feeling rather stuffed. It's deceptively filling with all that protein stuffed in there. I only have one complaint and it's a biggie for me – the bacon wasn't cooked enough, in fact it looked like it had barely touched the hot plate. Like most people, I like it at least a little bit crispy in some parts but this was more like ham in texture (and taste even). It has all the makings of a champ, but if it wasn't for that one major fault, this may have toppled the king of toasties. But Melissa's will have to settle for second today...
