The Deck Bar - Where East Meets West
• By Tuan Nguyen
The gang at work have made a few appearances at The Deck Bar lately, it's a nice spot to have an alfresco lunch and you also get a "free" drink to go with your main. Win win. I had a craving for fish and chips so I went with just that. The tempura batter was very crunchy and melted in your mouth which was a real winner for me and the fish was perfectly cooked. The home made tartare sauce was awesome as well. I've never been a fan of the stuff ever since I got really bad food poisoning from it many years ago (I knew it smelt funny! Still ate it though...), but this one was smooth and not tangy/tart like I often find them. The Maccas style french fries were a bit dissapointing. I reckon fish and chips should have chunky chips, not the anorexic kind that came with this dish.
Emma had the healthy Vietnamese crispy fried crepe which she'd never had before. It looked ok to me, but I noticed it was a bit too heavy on the bean sprouts and I don't recall seeing much in the way of prawns or pork, probably because I was too busy chowing down on the awesome tempura fish. Emma didn't seem to love it however. I think these are best when home made (by my mum!) with a giant selection of herbs and salads to choose from, then you can DIY fillings and stuff it to your hearts content. Myself, I like it with lots of herbs and butter lettuce and plenty of juliened cucumber and very light on the sprouts.
Richard's laksa looked the goods with plenty of bits on top and a nice colour to it. I asked him if it was better than the one from Rendevouz that he likes so much to which he answered "no, but still very tasty". Ouch.
