Chapel Lane Cafe
• By Tuan Nguyen
This groovy little café hasn't been open for long but they seem to have already gained a little following judging by the few times I've popped in for lunch.
You'll find them behind and Outback Jacks in the CBD. I'd describe them as a gourmet deli /cafe who cater for the lunch time crowd with a small but tasty range of focacias, pasta bakes, lasagnas, salads and warm pastries. Best of all however is that they're all damn cheap. DAMN CHEAP I SWEAR!
I got this beauty of a freshly toasted lamb and bread beast for $6.50 and wasn't even expecting the salad that got thrown in along side it too. In this day and age where you'd be hard pressed to get a ham and cheese sandwich for that much, Chapel Lane Café have set the (price) bar so low I don't know how they're gonna make a living. Work's for me and my wallet but! I suspect they'll raise their prices sooner or later though.
The meal itself was awesome and filling. It was kinda like a yiros/souvlaki with the tzatziki sauce but sandwich style. I've also had a really nice meat pie from here as well and will try the beasty looking lasagna at some stage. The bacon and egg toastie I had for breakfast one day needs a bit of work though. Head in early because they don't have much staff so you may be in for a little wait if there's a few customers lingering around. Otherwise if you don't mind waiting or are are dining in you can sit down on a cushion and read one of the many ridiculously stupid tabloid magazines lying around the café.
Emma was raving about when she went for a visit so it ain't just me who likes this place - I'd suggest you pop down for a visit during your lunch break as well!
