Casuarina Club - Dinner review
• By Tuan Nguyen
Enjoying my week off from work, we took some guests of ours to the Casuarina Club for a casual relaxed dinner. I've had some great steaks here on numerous occasions, but also the worst one I've ever had. Let's hope this visit will be a good one...
We picked a good night (Saturday) to go with it being very quiet thanks to the footy grand finals. There were only 3 or 4 tables occupied with a guy complete with beer belly singing Elvis covers throughout the night, he wasn't too bad either as proven by the groupies up the front enjoying his performance. I'm surprised none of the ladies threw their knickers at him. Our 6 meals all arrived within half an hour, any longer and there would have been some questions asked given the small number of patrons present.
Barramundi fish and chips ($22.50) - I've seen bigger bits of fish for a lot less money, but it looked like it was cooked fine.
Chicken schnitzel Mexicana ($19.50) - Under all of that sour cream, cheese and sauce, there is a bit of crumbed chicken. Personally, I reckon you can't beat a traditional schnitzel , but the misses likes her Mexican version. The problem with all that extra stuff on top is you can't even taste the main part of the dish... there might as well be tofu under there and you wouldn't even know it. Having said that, the missus really liked it, although it was too big for her and she only managed to get half way through.
Mixed grill ($28.90) - 200 gram rump steak, bacon, egg, sausages and 2 lamb cutlets. That's four different animals on the one plate for not a whole lot of money. Pretty good value if you ask me and one for those who don't know what they want to eat, the answer is simple - just eat everything!
And as for my dish, yep you guessed it - steak. I got the prime rib with mushroom sauce, ordered medium rare ($35). Now the last time I ordered a steak here it was a busy night and it came out cooked so well done that it was tougher than a car tyre. I only managed one decent bite from it that time and in hind sight I should have returned it, but I'm just too nice and was too hungry to wait. This time however, and as with many other times, the steak was quite good with a nice smokey flavour from the grill. The chips, whilst cooked perfectly, tasted a little burnt – probably time to change the oil.
Out of the sports club bistros I've visited so far (Maluka's, Tracey Village and Casuarina Club), I like this one the best for its great food and casual relaxed atmosphere. There's plenty of TVs around, a playground for the kids and live entertainment. Nicely done fellas.
