Kurt's Cakes. Master of pastry and sugar.
• By Tuan Nguyen
Man was I excited to hear Kurt's Cakes would be moving out of the shoebox at the back of Ducks Nuts/Bar Espresso! This guy has become a cult hero among cake and pastry fans in Darwin, impressing the hordes with creations ranging from cute mini tarts/pastries and all the way to epic wedding cakes. It was only a matter of time before he had to expand. And expand he did, right into a nice little shop in the Air Raid Arcade on Cavenagh Street, ever so conveniently a stones throw (or two) from my office.
I've ordered some cakes from Kurt before and he's always in a damn good mood and so damn friendly. I was under the impression all middle aged men were grumpy and hard to please, but not Kurt. He's always a pleasure to deal with and always has a huge smile on his face, which just makes those damn evil things he makes that much more enjoyable.
So now that there's a lot more room to play with, Kurt's Cakes now offers sandwiches, wraps, bread, pies, sausage rolls and other café regulars. There's also some nice Swiss muesli which I had for breakfast one day ($4.50 and very nice BTW). Coffee is also on the cards to round out the foodie experience. Breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea. If I didnt' have to work I would spend all day in the shop eating mini tarts, sip coffee like a boss and rapidly gain a lot of weight.
The pastries speak for themselves, but most people wouldn't be able to survive off chocolate for lunch, the exception being a chick I used to work with – she could eat junk like it was nothing. The beauty you see above is a chicken, salad and mayo panini-type sandwich for $7. Pretty cheap and tasty to boot. It's ready made and good to go, but I'd suggest having it toasted to crispy deliciousness before chowing down.
If you plan on dining in, be forewarned that there aren't that many tables to sit at so get in quick as them seats are in high demand. Thankfully there are both fans and air conditioning going at once, keeping you cool in the ridiculous heat and humidity going on at the moment. Don't forget to buy some cookies on the way out.
