The Boat Shed

The Boat Shed Salad

here was some office banter about The Boat Shed in Cullen Bay Darwin doing a ripper breakfast. I’m not in that area at such hours of the day, but I did managed to pop over on the weekend to try out some lunch.  The sign outside says coffee house, but it was much too hot for that and I had plenty of sleep the night before, so I was just here for the food today. The coffee shall be put to the test at some later stage… maybe.

The interior is very spacious and the high ceilings are sexy. There’s a room for adults to dump their kids and forget about them, a room for the beer and both indoor and outdoor seating. That’s a lot of space for a café!

I went with my café yardstick – the beef burger for $19.50. My work mates should have mentioned how expensive this place was, I shall butcher them when I get to work on Monday, they better watch out. For just shy of 20 benjamins, it better be a good burger. It should be better than the one at The Cav, twice as good asMelissa’s Godzilla Burger and even bigger than the one atSalvatores. Instead when it came out all I could think of  was “Is that all? And why is there a big knife plunged into it?”

Taste was good however, the home made pattie was super tender and finely minced, the aoili was quite nice as well. The chips were spectacular, I love the flat and fat style of chips. But definitely not worth $19.50.

The Boat Shed - Beef burger

My wife's Vegetarian Bliss (sweet potato, rocket, asparagus, cherry tomato, fetta and balsamic dressing - $17.50) was looking very dry season inspired in that the leaves were generally on the yellow side. The Boat Shed must have been out of lettuce that day because my burger and this salad was supposed to have it, but rocket leaves were substitued instead. It would have been a great salad full of substance except for the shocker of last weeks rocket leaves. The waitress just hmmed when I mentioned it to her and walked off. Alrighty then, just for that, I'm going to bitch about it on my blog.

Dry season rocket salad

Dry season rocket salad, note the one that's already turned into compost.

Maybe I'll give it another chance and go back for breakfast and a cup of coffee one day, but lunch didn't really inspire me. I don't mind paying lots for good food, but I can't help but think the menu is pricey because the owners are paying a lot in lease money. Hmmm!
