Finnegan's Gourmet Fish and Chips
• By Tuan Nguyen
Over on our Facebook page, Finnegans Gourmet Fish and Chips in Nightcliff got a few nods for best fish and chips in Darwin whilst fellow Darwin Foodie writer Emma constantly blows their trumpet too. So after taking the dogs for a walk along the always beautiful Nightcliff foreshore, I drove the team over to Aralia street to put the calories we had just worked off right back on (and then some).
Finnegan’s are evidently popular given the hordes of people waiting outside for their orders to be ready. A tiny shop on the corner of the complex, there isn’t much to distinguish it from any other competing fish and chip place.
After a short wait we decided to take the short 5 minute trip home to eat. With expectations sky high I tore open the bag and dug in but was quickly met with disappointment. The majority of chips were undercooked! They were also a bit soggy and limp, (even factoring in the drive home). Man what a let down, I had been eating healthy all week and I was hoping to pig out in style. Perhaps I got them on a bad day? I don't know. The fish was ok, although the barramundi fillet size was pretty skinny and the 3 bits of snapper were tiny. Too their credit though, neither the fish or the chips were oily. I must conclude that I don't know where the 'gourmet' comes in and am not entirely sure what everyone has been raving on about, I've had much better.
