The Barra Bar - Fish and chippies
• By Tuan Nguyen
Continuing my slow search for the best fish and chips in Darwin, The Barra Bar get's the Darwin Foodies treatment today. They have just moved into a fancy new premises just opposite the Mitchell Centre on Mitchell Street, I wonder if the food is just as nice? I got in early whilst they were still firing up their gear for the day, which was great news for me, ensuring that I'd have the freshest batch for the whole day. Booyah!
The window seating and outdoor style tables are really nice, you're practically on the street but with the benefits of air conditioning. A little noisy though due to the car traffic. I ordered a small (170 gram) Barramundi ($9) and chips ($4), I was considering large (220 grams) but thought $13 was already enough to spend. It's not easy to tell from the photo, but the piece of fish felt a lot bigger than 170 grams when it came out, it was very fat, juicy and fresh. The tempura like batter was nice and crunchy and I quite enjoyed it. There was still a fair bit of crunch even on the underside after 10 minutes.
The chips were good, cripsy on the outside and cooked all the way through. Not mind blowing though. They're lightly salted which is my preference as you can always add more yourself if you like. Removing excess however isn't so easy! A lot better than my experience at Finnegan's Gourmet Fish and Chips the other week. Oh yeah, I got some new camera gear, so if you see a dude walking around with a fancy new toy at lunch with a huge smile on his face - that's me.
