Transit Takeaway Oriental Food
• By Tuan Nguyen
The Transit Take-Away on Mitchell Street used to be my go to place for cheap food in a hurry, but in a bitter sweet twist of fate and fortune, I changed jobs and left the Mitchell Centre for greener pastures.
For what must have been well over several centuries, this hole in the wall take away was run buy a cute little husband and wife team in what must be the most low key and neat kitchen the culinary world has ever seen. I'm not sure what lay behind the drinks fridge, but I suspect some dark sorcery is involved. Anyways, the fella you see smiling at the camera in the pic below has taken over the reigns. Uncle and Aunty as he referred to them, have decided on a quiet sea change in their golden days and have left Darwin to move to the quiet clean air of Sydney to start up another shop. Damn you for leaving me before I could taste your sexy super spicy fried rice one more time, I'm completely gutted.
The bain-marie selection is small but adequate, as mentioned before, this is grab and go for the busy worker. They do however have a temendously tasty selection of a la carte menu options, although truth be told a few of them taste similar. But taste good they do! The generously proportioned mushroom and chicken (pictured above, $11) I had last week was beautiful, the sauce and white rice are a combo from the heavens. The char kway teow I had today ($11) was a bit heavy on the brown stuff and could have benefited from more green vegetables, can't complain too much though given the price.
There are a bunch of noodle soups on offer too, but the dry season has yet to show its true colours so I'll leave the hot stuff for a more cooler time. But whatever you have, I think you'll be pleased. It is still early days for the new team in the kitchen, but I believe the Transit Take-Away legacy has been left in good hands.
