K-Tong Palmerston
• By Tuan Nguyen
It's not often I find myself in Palmerston, but I was out that way doing some photography last night and decided to spend my hard earned dosh at K-Tong restaurant. It's a mixture of Thai and Chinese cuisine, but mostly favouring the former. I've heard some good things about this place so was keen to dive into the food. Atmosphere is quiet and casual. It's not too fancy a place but not too scrubby either which is just my cup of tea. There's some pretty cool artwork on the wall which I would be tempted to take him if I were a criminal. Totally diggin' the colour scheme on the back wall too. Service is a bit mixed. The waiter "wasn't sure" on a few things when asked and the chilli on the side took a few prompts to finally get delivered.
But enough of the itty-bitties, I was here for the food! The menu is full of very hard to pronounce dishes so if you think you sound stupid pronouncing them it's because you do. Gang keow whan pak anyone? I went the Pla Chu-chee (battered and fried fish in chu-chee curry paste, coconut cream and vegies) and some pad pak (stir fried vegies). Both were very nice, not too heavy on the spices or condiments with the balance just right for the palate me thinks. I reckon most other Thai eats around town are too heavy on flavour and chilli, but not at K-Tong Palmerston homies (Not to be confused with K-Tong in Casuarina or in the City). Less is more peoples!
Wife foodie had the chicken and vegie noodle soup, with extra vegies (and a lot of it!). The stock was nice and meaty and full of chicken flavour goodness with shit loads of ingredients piled on top of the noodles too. Much better than the one I sampled at Rendevouz Cafe a few nights prior in fact. Overall a pleasant, tasty and great value meal. I was a pig and finished both mains by myself along with my half of the entrée dim sims, so much for "if I can't finish it I'll take away". Meal complete, I waddled out of the door $53 lighter in change, but very satisfied.
