The Potato Man

The Potato Man - baked spud chilli con carne

Eating baked spuds on a Sunday evening by the sea side whilst watching the sun set. If that doesn't sound like a good idea to you than you have serious issues. Darwin food  hall of fame contender, The Potato Man, has been been roastin' them potatoes since the late 80's whilst I was still learning how to count to 10 (maths never being a strong attribute of mine). Sundays from 5pm to 7.30 whether rain or shine and probably even cyclonic conditions, the potato entourage rock up to the Nightcliff Swimming Pool car park where a flock of hungry humans in the know are eagerly waiting to be fed. You'll also find them at the Mindil Beach Markets on Thursdays, however I think the Nightcliff location has that something special going on to enhance the experience.

It's a simple idea really, baked potatoes with toppings of your choice - chilli con carne, bolognese, baked beans, sour cream, cheese, 'slaw and some other stuff which escapes me right now. So simple, but done sooo well. The potato itself is super creamy-soft and piping hot and no matter what topping you go with you can be assured it's a match made in culinary heaven. As the side of the truck says  - "You won't be dissapointed". They've being doing this for 25 years now which is plenty time to get the formula right.

The Potato Man - epic baked spuds

I went with chilli con carne, sour cream, cheese and a big dollop of butter on this occasion and it did not disappoint. Perhaps it could have been spicier like a proper chilli con carne, but as a family friendly version it works well. You can eat it faster too and then go back for more... If you're cruel like me, you can also take a seat next to the exercise path and torment all the joggers and bike riders with your yummy dinner. Double satisfaction from a polystyrene box baby! Or you can walk 20 meters to the ocean edge and enjoy your carb delight whilst watching the sun set. Can't beat it really, this is Darwin living at it's finest.
