Kewpie mayonnaise
• By Tuan Nguyen
The Japanese have mastered the art of electronics, cars, weird stuff, raw fish and last but not least, mayonnaise. The most popular brand in Japan is Kewpie, and lucky for us folk down under, you can get it at any decent supermarket these days (look in the Asian section). It's in typically Japanese packaging - weird baby thing with minimal design and labeling. No need for anything fancy, because those in the know are already aware of the awesomeness inside the squishy bottle. In fact the bottle pictured above was the very last one on the shelf at Woolies when I went, evidently people are catching on.
Unlike regular mayo, Kewpie mayonnaise is smoother, creamier and thicker due to high egg content and rice vinegar used to make it. I never liked the tangy crap that is usually found in jars, but this stuff is gets along quite well with my delicate taste buds. Use it on sandwiches and whatever else you usually put your mayo on, and because it tastes great and squeezes out in a cute star shape, you can be forgiven for applying it liberally all over your grub.
