Zchilli - Black Star Sweet Chilli Sauce and NT BBQ Sauce

Craig over at Zchilli dropped off a bottle of Black Star (Sweet Chilli) and NT Barbeque Sauces, made from Trinidad Scorpion (ButchT) Chillis  - the world's hottest chilli. I reviewed the SIN Thai Sweet Sauce not long ago, for those who don't remember, it is mouth numbingly hot and I was lucky to survive unscathed (phyically, not so much mentally). Like the SIN sauce, these are home made with home grown Trinidad scorpion (ButchT) chillis. These are considered the hottest chillis in the world and come in at 1.4 million scoville units. In comparison a Thai bird’s eye chilli is 100,000 (yes, one hundred thousand) and a lowly jalepeno comes in at a mere 10,00. If you aren’t good with numbers, I’ve taken the time to design a graph for dramatic effect – please see below.

The photo of the sauce bottles above are after I had already tried them a few times, new bottles would be filled to the top. The Black Star sauce is my favourite of the pair with its garlic, citrus and fish sauce aromas. It reminds me more of a Vietnamese dipping fish sauce than a traditional sweet chilli sauce. This being a great thing in my books. It isn't too hot either, not anywhere near the SIN sauce, meaning you can smother your food in it without worrying about having your tongue catch alight. Really really good stuff. The sediment gathers on the bottom so you need to give the bottle a good shake before serving on the food of your choice (it goes well with anything Asian-like). The NT Barbeque Sauce is trademark Zchilli hot, but again, not as much as the SIN sauce. Craig tells me this is on purpose so that you taste the flavours better. I concur with his reasoning, too much chilli for the sake of being ridiculously hot is unecessary (That's what the SIN sauce is for).

The NT BBQ sauce is made from a traditional stockman recipe from outback NT circa 1840. Containing freshly brewed coffee, beer and cooked for a whopping three days, the spirit of the Northern Territory flows strongly within this bottle. The flavours are strong and earthy with a hint of something that reminds me of licquorice. Really great with meaty foods like... meat. First then SIN sauce, then the Black Star and NT BBQ, Zchilli are providing NT chilli lovers with some seriously good stuff.
