Bellakay Indonesian cafe
• By Tuan Nguyen
Indonesian and Malay cuisine is increasingly becoming more popular around Darwin and the latest taste bud contender is Bellakay in the Centre Point Arcade, Smith Street Mall. Unfortunately my go-to Indian lunch place OM Indian Cuisine has relocated to Stokes Hill Wharf, but at least that means there's finally something decent to eat there. Fortunately for us CBD folk though it was quickly replaced by Bellakay. Good bye butter chicken and hello beef rendang.
As I did for my previous reviews of Sari Rasa, Sumatra Cafe and Ayuriz Cafe, I went beef rendang and chilli eggplant. I also got some dried beef with potato and the nice guy behind the counter even threw in a beef pattie on top.
It all looks good visually with plenty of visible spices and what not, I also don't recall seeing much in the way of fats and oils which I've usually experienced at the other places. Other than the usuals of chicken curry, beans and curry, vegetables, chilli eggs, I also noticed a tempting mackeral curry and the aforementioned beef patties.
Taste wise everything was fine. The chilli eggplant silky smooth with just enough gunpower in it to get your sweat glands interested. The beef rendang wasn't fall apart but it wasn't dry either. I've yet to have one in Darwin that is both super tender and still moist. If I had to pick one I'd probably go the moist but not fall apart option.
The dry beef and potato was probably my favourite, the former being rehydrated very nicely and the potato a great flavour sponge.
A bittersweet review today. I bid farewell to my favourite lunchtime Indian destination but say hello to another yummy Indonesian curry cafe. Ooh yeah. Check them out next time you're out for lunch in the Darwin CBD - Centre Point Arcade, Smith Street Mall.
