Noodle House Mitchell Street

Noodle House - Chicken with oyster sauce

The wife and I did a random pit stop at Noodle House on Mitchell Street last night after attending the October Business Month opening speech by Glen McGrath. It was a wonderful talk full of great cricketing stories and various inspirational and motivational advice. Do check out the other events running this month if you’ve got your own business, want to start one or just want to learn something new.

Anyways, on with the review. It’s been a while since my last visit to Noodle House (both the one on Knuckey Street and this one on Mitchell Street). Mostly because I like to eat at new and different places whenever possible. The food here is the usual Chinese fare, but always tasty and rarely disappoints.

Noodle House is one of the more upmarket Chinese restaurants in Darwin, the interior is decked out in oriental inspired ornaments, artworks and fittings. The chairs I must say are rather comfortable compared to everywhere else I’ve eaten recently. Perfect for my big behind then. There’s plenty of seating both in and out, but given the build up weather you’d be nuts to sit outside.

Noodle House - Mapo tofu

As mentioned earlier, the menu consists of generic Chinese food, although there are some nice seafood and desert items. For the wine connoisseur they've got plenty of drops to choose from one of the many wine fridges. Most of the mains start in the mid $20's and go up from there, so not cheap but like I said it's a bit on the fancy side here. Lunch is a lot cheaper with a selection of  rice and stir-fry dishes around the $13 mark.

Noodle House - San choy bow

The service I wouldn't call friendly, but certainly efficient and attentive which is good enough for me. Noodle House seems to have the staff-to-diner ratio sorted out well. We had the one lady looking after us the entire time and she swapped our bowls for new ones after we were done with our entrees - I can't remember the last time that ever happened. Cool cool. Then she served our rice for us for the mains which was another small but appreciated gesture.

The food itself was good. I liked the addition of lap cheong (Chinese sausage) in the san choy bow ($12) and the sauce coating was yummo for want of a better word. The mains came out 32 minutes later which was probably 12 minutes more than my stomach would find acceptable. But in any case the chicken with vegetables in oyster sauce ($25) was delicious and velvety tender. The mapo tofu ($21) wasn't the best I've had but perhaps that's because I'm increasingly getting all high and mighty with my food reviewing. It was still pretty good though and whoever did the slicin' and a dicin' of the ingredients did a pretty good job, same goes for everything else on the table too.

Overall Noodle House on Mitchel Street is a pretty good place to eat out with friends or guests that may be visiting. The service gets the job done just fine and the food always goes down well.
