The Cavenagh - Steak for dinner
• By Tuan Nguyen
As you may be aware by now, steak and I have not had a good relationship when dining out, so it was with much trepidation and only after lots of internal debate, that I headed to The Cav to chow down on some brown cow for dinner. Fingers crossed.
I sat down all by my lonesome (my wife being abroad for work) which was weird, but at least I was comforted by my iPhone and the view of the cricket on one of the many TVs. It's bistro dining so you go to the counter to order, then over to the bar to get a drink.
The inside dining area was pretty much full by 7.15, probably helped by the fact that it was 2 for 1 rumps night. But I don't do rump, rather I am a scotch fillet or rib eye man. For $42 I went the Rib on the Bone, 500 grams, "Nolans Private Selection grain fed European breed composite, South East QLD". For that much money and for such a long description it had better be good I tell you. I also had to wait bang on 42 minutes for it to arrive - is it worth $1 a minute? Fuck yes! Perfection cannot be rushed, and I do not hesitate when I type the words "epically awesome", "orgasmic steak sex" and "holy cow". After so many misses, The Cav hits the nail on the head. Tender, juicy, medium-rare, smokey grilled and bursting with flavour. I can assure you that later tonight whilst I am sleeping I will be having reminiscent wet dreams about it.
The steak-whispering guy tending the grill has worked this chunk of beef to perfection. Equally cooked from all angles, I don't know how he did it, surely there must be some sort of black magic spell cast on the grill as it looks like any other of its kind. Even the meat near the bone was cooked medium-rare when it usually ends up rare or under. For once I support the dark arts and so should you. Everything else on the plate is only there to fill the gaps in your stomach, the steak is the main attraction here, although the home cut chips are fantastic - top three in Darwin according to my colleague.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner - The Cav has truly transformed into a great eat stop, well done to the team running the show. The coffee here is good too, always consistent and neither too strong or too milky. It's on my morning caffeine rotation along with Xtreme Caffeine across the road when I need a stronger hit. Haul ass over to The Cav and try out the steak. I hope you'll be as impressed as I was.
