Cove Restaurant - Breakfast
• By Tuan Nguyen
I think I've unwittingly committed myself to reviewing every Eggs Benedict on offer in Darwin. This time I'm at Cove Restaurant at SkyCity Casino on a quiet early Sunday morning. The place is empty when we get there at 7.30am, it's as if I booked the entire place to myself which is nice. Being a part of the new resort, everything is beautifully slick and modern and right next to the gigantic lagoon pool. A real nice place to sit and chillax on a cool morning. A few other diners eventually joined us but it was still very quiet and peaceful. We order eggs benedict ($15.50) and the Cove Signature Breakfast ($19.50) which is just a fancy way of saying "lots of fried stuff".
But first we start of with a double chocolate peanut butter muffin. And yes it is as awesome as it sounds. Fresh from the oven, it's still warm-ish and fluffy and oh so rich, but not too rich in that mud-cake kinda way. This thing should be classified as an illegal drug as one could seriously get hooked on it.
The main course arrives without much delay as one would expect being the first order of the day. I can feel the plates have been pre-warmed which is a nice touch and the presentation is great for both dishes. I won't beat around the bush - the eggs benno are fantastic and the wife agrees. The freshly made hollandaise sauce is lemony, buttery and oh so smooth. The muffin - ham - egg - sauce ratio is spot on. Normally I find there's not enough ham or too much sauce, but here the mathematics has been calculated with precision. The only negative I can comment on is that the eggs were slightly over, but not enough to go have a cry in the corner about it. This goes in my "top 3 of all Darwin time" basket.
The Signature Breakfast is just fried stuff really so I can't really provide too much deep philisophical ponderings about it. The scrambled eggs were good but perhaps could be injected with some more butter and the bacon could be grilled for longer to get that nice crispy caramelisation on the surface. Coffee was a little on the weak side, but certainly gave me my worning wake me up. There are weekend specials for breakfast that aren't your typical fare, to name a few:
- Smashed Avocado Persian Feta poached egg and grilled tomato
- Yoghurt panna cotta with French Toast and strawberries
- House made baked beans on ciabatta with poached egg and chorizo
- Buttermilk pancakes, butterscotch sauce with pecans and fresh strawberries
- Potato hash with bacon spinach roasted tomato poached egg and bagna cauda sauce
- Herb roasted mushrooms spinach and goats cheese with truffle oil
If the sound of that doesn't get your taste buds wet then I don't know what will. And with some crazy ass descriptions like that, it's no wonder the waiter needs to read the specials to you off of a piece of paper. So there you have it, a very pleasant breakfast experience at Cove SkyCity. Fancy location delivers fancy breakfast, I'll be back for sure. #Winning.
