The Milk Bar - Breakfast

Sister venue of the highly popular Four Birds cafe, the Milk Bar is the latest addition to the Galleria eatery in Smith Street Mall.  Given the pedigree involved, I swung by for breakfast with high expectations.

Just like Four Birds you can find lots of yummy bagel delights, there’s also home made savoury mince, home made baked beans and other various light breakfast goods. They don’t have a proper kitchen so you I don’t think you’ll be getting your fix of eggs benedict here.

The prices are a little off putting to be honest, for what is really just another eatery outlet. A fruit salad will set you back $9.50, Toast with preserve (whatever that might be) $6.50 and the aforementioned savoury mince & baked bean dishes are $18.50 each. Four Birds is just as expensive but at least it’s a cool place to hang out.

I go for what must be Darwin’s most expensive bacon and egg sandwich at $10. There’s a large amount of fancy bread, lots of fresh spinach, an egg and two strips of bacon. Even ignoring the price tag, it was a pretty average B&E toastie. There’s too much bread, not enough bacon and the spinach is really not needed (lightly sautéed instead of raw would be better at the least). I usually like to visit a place for breakfast at least twice but I feel it wasn’t required in this instance. I think they should really reduce their prices to encourage more dining patrons. Yeah Four Birds is just as expensive, but at least it’s a much nice place to hang out. I was the only one there eating anything during my visit, everyone else was just having a coffee.

Speaking of coffee, the barista making the mornings a better experience used to work over at Java Spice. Even without all the space age equipment he used to brew on he is still able to produce a mean coffee. In the true spirit of the job, his sole task is to make coffee and he does so with great skill. The presentation and flavour of my long machiatto both being excellent.

As a breakfast destination, I'm not really feeling it - I've had much better experiences elsewhere. Perhaps I'll try lunch one day as I saw the other week that they had the "Ultimate hot dog" for  $10 on the menu - certainly sounds interesting being the huge hot dog lover than I am.
