Petra's Raw Cakes
• By Tuan Nguyen
Super healthy desserts that are uncooked but still taste great? Doesn't sound possible or even edible but Petra of Petra's Raw Cakes reckons she has the goods. I scored myself a sample box of Vanilla Coffee Creme on cinnamon chocolate crust with salted caramel, caramel slice, carrot goji cake with spicy icing, strawberry cheesecake and last but not least a lime and macadamia cheesecake. Already I'm salivating, but am still unsure of how it's going to taste.
All of Petra's cakes are allergen free - gluten, wheat, soy, eggs, milk and kryptonite with no sugar, butter, margarine etc. It's kept as natural as possible to keep all the vitamins, minerals and good fats undisturbed. The sweetness is provided by honey, dates and/or coconut depending on the cake. I'm told that these desserts aren't designed to be a clone of their unhealthy but oh so evil-good counterparts, but rather be a healthy alternative. Food allergy or health conscious eaters should certainly take note. Sounds like a pretty ambitious task to have all the above but still be tasty, but holy guacamole they're actually really darn good! I don't say that because I got it for free either as I've already bought a whole lime cheese cake that I was going share with colleagues, but alas I decided to keep it all to myself (hehe). It's too good to share and is my favourite of the ones I tasted with its cool fresh lime taste. Of particular note is the crunchy, nutty, coconutty base, which is a lot better than a regular biscuit base thanks to all the various goodies that Petra has packed into it.
The dense caramel slice is rich in flavour, but not too sweet as one would expect. This I like as I'm not much of a sweet tooth. Melt in your mouth goodness. The vanilla coffee creme on cinnamon chocolate crust was also lovely. It could perhaps do with a bit more coffee flavour, but then again my caffeine consumption is rather high these days so it's probably only me who would think that. The strawberry cheesecake didn't have as much oomph as the lime version but I still went to town on it. It's very pretty too.
Last of all was the carrot goji cake and admittedly my least favourite of the group. It tasted a bit too weird for me but others may like it. Overall the desserts gave me an impression of vibrant freshness with absolutey no after-guilt. The only thing you will feel guilty about is tip-toeing to the fridge in the middle of the night to steal the last piece from your friends and family. Or maybe not. Petra used to run a traditional cake shop (the unhealthy but evil-good kind), but since having a child she has seen the light and gone healthy, now preferring to whip up all natural healthy cakes from home while looking after the little one. She's onto something special here. Submit your Raw Cake order via her Facebook page.
