Fiddler's Green - Breakfast
• By Tuan Nguyen
Fiddler's Green is probably the most popular of the eats/drinking holes down at the Waterfront for breakfast, lunch and dinner so I stopped by last weekend to get a breakfast fix. The alfresco area is already half full at 10am, but we site inside anyway. Call me a sissy if you want but the weather is getting hot and humid so I'll take air-conditioned comforts any day. Plus the inside is kinda cool in that Irish pub kind of way. Lots of stained wooden tables and chairs, brown panels and a splash of red. Looks legit authentic Irish pub to me but also an interior decorators worst nightmare at the same time.
A chirpy gentleman shows us to our booth and we're the only ones inside but that's OK - I like to call it "booking out the entire restaurant for a private function". Service was prompt, I order a coffee and the wifey a juice. A minute later I have a latte in front of me. I wouldn't call it strong, but more mid to low strength - a good cup with no complaints. There must be an array of highly trained and efficient leprechaun chefs working up a storm in the kitchen because our meals came out not long after, it couldn't have been more than 10 minutes since we sat down and let's not forget it was already busy! Our breakfast protein consists of an Irish Fiddlers Breakfast (big arse fry up) and good old eggs benno. The former has the usuals in addition to some black pudding and potato pancakes. The pudding I'd never heard of before but seemed to be some kind of sausage. It tasted pretty good, until I suspected what it was and Googled it, and then all of a sudden didn't taste as good anymore (still nice but). The potato pancakes were delicious - I could seriously devour a whole plate of them - it's like the best parts of a hash brown and a pancake combined into one!
The eggs benedict was really nice too, the sauce perhaps a wee bit on the thick side but had great flavour. The English muffin was toasted to perfection and the eggs and ham done nicely. It could do with some garnishing to make it prettier, but all round great job. Fiddler's seems to be a great spot for breakfast so I'll definitely check out lunch and dinner at some stage after this. No wonder this joint is so popular. Cherio!
