Monsoons Lunch
• By Brioche of Tarth
The Monsoons crew is shaking things up for the city lunch crew with their $15 meals! They were ever so kind to invite a few of Darwin’s foodies so you might have seen some similar pictures.
These meals have been carefully crafted to help with the dying lunch mobs with their largely Mediterranean menu.
Get ready to drool.
The Greek kefta with the house made pita is something to cause a stir. The meat was perfectly cooked with perfect kisses of chargrill lines. The coarse mince is on the drier side so that it absorbed dat delicious garlic yogurt sauce.
We weren't that sure about the side of salad though, it wasn't very Greek and the vinaigrette made the pita rather soggy.
Buckwheat bowl with kefir natural yoghurt, avocado, sprouting seeds, poached egg with a rose harissa. Little things done simply and a very generous serve of everything – I swear there was almost a whole avocado on that dish.
Perfect for the vego's out there!
We love the little tray that it came in!
Like a moth to the flame the wagyu burger was destined to be ordered. Wondeful light flame grilled smokey flavour, tender patty and just the right amount of veggie bits. We're not fond of the trend of monster burgers and prefer well balanced flavours in a package you can actually hold and stick in your mouth. Perfect lunch time meal.
The pizza has some great toppings options - but mozzarella is all the wins and pesto always brings it to the next level! The pizza size is perfect for one and it really fills you with the thick bread like crust. 10/10 will eat again.
Oh my gosh, there's finally truffle fries in town! We were super excited and wolfed down most of the chips... and we wondered where the unami truffle taste was.... and it was in the aioli! Thankfully there was a side of chips from the burger dish to enjoy the truffle mayo. Absolutely delicious!
And from the dinner menu was their house smoked fish and cold noodles.
N: We thought the fish was salmon, and I took the biggest piece into my gob because, I really do like salmon. As I was chewing the fish I started to formulate adjectives in my brain: smokey (duh)... teriyaki baste... mmmm... dry... wow, really dry.
(My personal preference for fish is the fatty kind with that 'succulent' finish where it's still slightly soft and pillowy like gnocchi.)
So the fish is dry, and the cold noodles was marinated in too much mirin, and there was something about the texture of the noodles that did not satisfy my noodle brain. This sounds like a terrible dish but I think that it was just my personal preference that interferred. It was a lot more like a Japanese cold noodle salad, which can be delicious. This 'salmon' turned out to be smoked trout at the end of the meal and it was a little too late to re-experience the dish, but I will try it again and let you know how it goes!
Overall
Love what these guys are doing. If you're a regular it will be of no surprise to you - the same guys in the kitchen have been running the show for a while now and are always looking to improve their offering with great value dishes a step above what you'd expect from a pub/bar/night club type setting. If you're not a regular, maybe you should be!
